Take Action
Let’s work together to make a difference!
As part of our commitment to furthering our mission to stop impaired driving and to support the victims of this violent crime, MADD Toronto members and volunteers are active in schools across Toronto to heighten awareness of the dangers of impaired driving.
Read on to find out how YOUR SCHOOL or YOU as an individual can benefit from our programs or work together with us to further our mission in the Greater Toronto Area.
School and Community Group Presentations:
MADD Toronto volunteers regularly visit schools and community groups to talk about the dangers and effects of drinking and driving - emotional, legal, and financial. Many of our volunteers speak from a victim’s perspective and others are concerned citizens. Presentation time and content can vary and is often created to fit the needs of the audience. Please call 416-924-2666 if you are interested in finding out more or would like to book a presentation.
Poster, Essay Writing and Multi-media Contest:
The Poster, Essay Writing and Multi-media Contest is done at both a National and individual Chapter level each year. The purpose of this Contest is to raise awareness of the dangers of impaired driving to students at elementary and secondary schools. It encourages students to really think about the effects of impaired driving and enables them to educate their peers on this issue as well. MADD Toronto participates in this contest by inviting students from elementary and secondary schools all over the GTA to submit either a poster or essay (or both) or a multi-media project, demonstrating the dangers and effects of impaired driving. There are specific contest guidelines such as length, etc. and there is a theme every year. Winners from the Toronto Chapter contest in all categories are awarded prizes and their submissions are entered in the National Contest, where they have the chance to win more prizes and receive more recognition.
Multi-media Assembly Shows for Elementary and High Schools:
MADD Canada’s multi-media assembly program challenges students and educators across Canada to make wise and healthy choices. This traveling show gives insight into the repercussions of impaired driving, while motivating youth to make the right decisions. MADD’s multi-media shows are shown on 3 GIANT SCREENS. MADD Canada has created these presentations using the latest DVD technology to produce a sensory experience that will have students talking for days. The audience will be engaged by the poignant stories featuring real young people, celebrity interviews, movie clips and more. For more information, or to book a show, visit www.maddyouth.ca.
Schools in Toronto may either book their own show, or win one by participating in the Youth in Control program. MADD Toronto helps with the end of year judging for the Youth In Control program. Out of the 10 winners, 4 schools will be chosen to receive a FREE MADD Multi-media Presentation (approx. value $1,000), donated by MADD Toronto.
A New DVD Braking Point:
Braking Point is a new DVD designed to be used as a teaching tool and informational video for high schools. It is designed to create awareness in teenagers of the risks and dangers involved in drinking, marijuana use, and impaired driving; to connect these risks to common settings and situations in which many teens find themselves; to help them understand that there are alternatives to dangerous risks; to provide strategies to help them practice those alternatives; and to reduce the deaths and injuries caused by impaired driving. It is designed to complement curriculum areas that deal with health and safety and making healthy choices. There are 3 versions of the Program - one in English, one in French and an Aboriginal version - and your school can get a free copy for classroom use by contacting MADD Toronto.
Supplies and Information:
The Toronto Chapter office is the place for you to pick up red ribbons, brochures, pamphlets, etc. These will be provided to you free of charge. The office is located at 35 Lytton Blvd., Lower Level, Toronto, between Lawrence and Eglinton, on Duplex.
Please call 419-924-2666 for an appointment.
