Every day in Canada, just under 4 deaths and 187 injuries are caused by impaired driving.
Thousands of Canadians are personally affected each year by impaired driving. Thousands more will continue to be affected until this completely preventable crime stops happening. Every citizen should care about this. No one thinks it will happen to them, but unfortunately, no one is safe.
MADD Toronto Chapter provides support to the victims of this violent crime in Toronto. “Our situation would have been even harder to handle without the support of MADD Canada,” says Carolyn Swinson, whose 27 year old son Rob was killed by an impaired driver in 1993. “They provide a unique kind of understanding and support - both emotional and legal - that is unequalled.”
Support
Our trained Victim Service Volunteers provide a unique kind of support to those who have been affected by the crime of impaired driving. VSVs help in various ways:
~ by offering a non-judgmental and understanding presence in times of need
~ by being there when others may have shied away
~ by providing valuable insight into the legal system, particularly as it pertains to impaired driving cases
~ by providing accompaniment to court, if wished
~ by providing help and advice when writing the Victim Impact Statement, if wished
MADD Toronto also provides support and a welcoming kind of ‘haven’ for victims of impaired driving crashes. MADD Canada is the only organization in Canada that puts victims’ rights and feelings ahead of all else.
MADD Toronto remembers and honours those that have been killed or injured in impaired driving crashes through our online tributes and through our Annual (whether it be on a National or local level) Candlelight Vigils.
Victims’ Tributes
MADD Canada and MADD Toronto both host online Victims’ Tributes pages which were created out of a commitment to, and respect for, those whose lives have been forever changed as a result of impaired driving. MADD Canada’s site includes tributes from all across the country, whereas MADD Toronto’s site focuses on tributes from those in the GTA.
These personalized tributes give victims of impaired driving both a voice and face to acknowledge the reality of their loss.
MADD Canada also has a Memorial Wall at the National Office in Oakville, dedicated to the innocent victims of impaired driving.
Local and National Candlelight Vigils
Both MADD Canada and MADD Toronto host Candlelight Vigils for the victims and the families of victims of impaired driving. MADD Canada’s Vigils are held in Scarborough every two years out of three and are open to all those across Canada who wish to honour a loved one in this way. Every third year, when MADD Canada’s Vigil is hosted in another part of the country, MADD Toronto hosts a local Vigil for those in the GTA who wish to honour the memory of their loved one in this way.
