March 21, 2007

Dear [MP];

We are writing to you on behalf of the many volunteers and members of the Toronto Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD Canada) to urge you to support the impaired driving legislation currently before you in government.

On March 27, 2007, you will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the fight against impaired driving in the GTA and in Canada. You will have a vote to support Bill C-376, the private members’ legislation that establishes a new 0.05% BAC federal legal limit. This legislation will be debated on March 26th and voted on at second reading on March 27th.

We urge you to support and pass this bill. This legislation will save lives and have an impact on all drivers - including those drinking drivers termed ‘hard core drinkers.’ This legislation does not impact social drinking. We would happy to send you all the background information and research on the potential impact of this Bill, should you wish. We would also like to see the following two Bills dealt with expeditiously:

Bill C-9 - This legislation, which eliminates conditional sentencing for violent crimes, is currently in the Senate. We feel that this legislation should include the crimes of impaired driving causing death and impaired driving causing bodily harm and we would like to see impaired driving as part of the Bill before an election.

Bill C-32 - This is the drug-impaired driving legislation. We feel that this legislation has two very attractive measures in it that will ensure that justice is properly served, namely the capability for police to detect and effectively charge drug-impaired drivers, and the elimination of “The Last Drink” defense and the limitation of the Carter “Two Drink” Defense.

We welcome the chance to meet with you at your convenience to discuss the current legislation in detail. Alternatively, we would be more than willing to answer any questions you have on the current legislation via telephone. Please do not hesitate to telephone the MADD Toronto office at 416-924-2666 to set up a meeting or to request further information.

In memory of our loved ones;

[members and volunteers of MADD Toronto]
